Thank you very much Doug. I think you have pointed us in the right direction and indeed your statement that you should not leave the system on for more than 10- 15 mins and our experience at the heat in the solenoid (the one that completely failed has indications of extreme heat as the paint has pealed on it) is clear evidence of leaving it on too long.
The situation which prompted him to leave it on too long was the fact that once the solenoid failed completely the jacks down light stayed on continuously on that jack- so he disconnected the horn and left it on to see if the jack down light would go out.
And that brings up another question. Why is the jacks down light still on with the fuse blown and the Jack fully up? There are wires to the top of the jack which I assume go to a micro switch. Is it possible that the micro switch has failed?
