The little screw-on thingy you're referring to is, I assume, the metal bulb-shaped connector typically on spark plugs?
I have seen engines where they were not used. It sounds to me like your generator is probably one of them, as I can't think of any reason why an owner would go to the effort of installing a spark plug without one unless it were superfluous and your observations seem to confirm that this is the proper configuration.
