BTW the Bolt/LEAF get about 4 miles to the kWh. And they use LESS if stuck in traffic which is opposite of a gasoline car so it is hard to comprehend.

Cost of solar + battery is on par with fossil fuels and dropping. Sometimes it may pay to hang onto the old paid for equipment but as it wears out there will be a lower cost option.

Personally I think we should pay $1 at the freeway onramp to reduce the hop-on hop-off vehicles disrupting the flow of traffic. City streets would suffer.

Howdy. Although both our EV’s use less power than the 4 miles per kWh mentioned let’s go with the 4 as it makes the math simple. Using a 21 day work month that is about 315 KWh per month. 15 KWh per day times 21 days for a 60 mile commute there and back. On my power rate at 11cents per KWH that is about 35 bucks per month. That’s travelling 1260 miles per month. After that it depends on where you live and how much you pay for gas and what mileage you get in your car on wether it is worth it for you.

Let’s say you 32 miles to the gallon in your car or pick up. That’s about 40 gallons per month. Let’s say you pay 3 bucks per gallon. Some places in the world are more and some are less. So about 120 bucks for fuel. So a reasonable savings even if you are driving a fuel efficient car. Don’t forget other maintenance though. We have had our one EV almost three years and have spent roughly a dollar on washer fluid. Total maintenance in three years. I am going to have to replace the wiper blades in a year or two as well. Obviously there are lots of factors that affect the decision on buying but these numbers worked for us.
