It seems that the chassis alternator/VR system will often not fully charge the house battery(set) due to voltage drop between the two, or overcharge, boil the electrolyte away, for a deeply discharged...

I prefer to solar charge because it is a one time cost. For a pair of six volt batteries 300 to 400 watts will create a magnificent system that will easily equalize the battery bank--and there will be no more gassing to worry about.
