Jeez PT, let the OP answer first. He may have been hitting the batts when so low that they can only accept 3 amps, with 90 amps, and no way to refuse. "Boiling over" might be the result.
In the case I saw, the charger was able to adjust its amps to the situation as batts accepted more and more amps up from dead low.
If the alternator is not "smart" maybe that is what the OP had happen in his rig. OP?
