Alternator VR's are NOT "smart"! In an instantaneous sense they attempt to raise the battery (system) voltage to the fixed (adjusted for ambient F)target voltage, 14.8(?) volts. Should the output voltage never rise to the target level the alternator rotor supply current will remain at maximum.
2500 RPM, 90 AMPS (whatever) into the load.
A normally operating system will switch (PWM) the rotor current on and off at a RAPID rate in accordance with how fast the battery terminal voltage "instantaneously" rises to the target voltage.
