igloo icemaker

Just bought an igloo icemaker for the counter in the motorhome. The ice is not as frozen as we expected and the icemaker make lots of noise. Is it mine or all.

  • Our portable ice maker is fairly quiet, but these things make what is called "wet ice" and do not keep that long, putting them in the freezer as mentioned greatly increases the life of the ice. :)
  • Yes they make a little noise
We use a gallon of water, make ice until the machine stops
We bag the ice in zip lock bags and put it in the freezer
Before we run out we do it again, twice maybe three times a week during the summer
it's gets plenty hard in the freezer
15 minutes after we put It in the freezer, we remove bag and tap on it to make sure ice is not all stuck together, and then put back in freezer
This keeps it from becoming one big frozen block
  • Ours is a little on the loud side too. We put it outside normally while making ice and keep excess ice in our freezer.

I always thought I would add a small freezer and ice maker to my OFF-ROAD POPUP trailer front deck. I have just the right height for something like this here... I have carried a second small fridge there on a couple of long stay trips which worked out good...

We usually head into town somewhere every couple of days for supplies and ICE when camping off the power grid.

  • The counter top units are a little noisy while cooling during the ice making cycle and of course when dumping ice. They make ice in 7 minutes so turn it off when it's full and then back on when you need ice. Most of the time it should sound like a desktop computer fan when the computer is running hot or the air conditioning vents in a car when the blower is turned on high.

We keep ours outside and bring the ice in when ice is needed inside the RV. I shut it off at night so it won't disturb the neighbors.

Unfortunately, the cubes are porous due to the way in which they are made. That means you'll need to refill the ice in your glass more often.

We have one for the RV and One for our home for the patio area. They both work well and are about 5 years old.
  • Hardness of ice cubes depend on the type of water being used.
Have an ice maker in the fridge, never use one of the portables. I'm sure someone else has more to add.
