Installing a backup camera, need help

I bought a backup camera and monitor for my truck. Have installed everything, but need to run the wires to the power source on my truck to power up the monitor and camera which I mounted on the rear bumper of my truck. I am at a total loss when it comes to where I should run the wires. I have 3 wires; one red for power, one black for ground and one blue that is supposed to be wired into the backup lights that will turn the camera on when I put the truck in reverse. I think I have found a ground for the black wire but I have no idea where I should run the other two wires. Help:?

One possibility is to splice into the positive and ground wires for the cigarette/cigar lighter.

There will be a wire for the backup lights somewhere under the dash, or you can splice into the wire at the backup light and run a wire forward.

My preference is to leave the blue wire disconnected. With the blue wire connected, you will find that the monitor almost blinds you when you get into the vehicle after dark and begin to back up.

I followed Fred's advice and spliced into the cigarette lighter's positive and ground wires. The camera works great using this power source.
  • On mine, the transmitter was wired to the back up lights positive wire and negative to ground. The monitor has a cigarette lighter plug in, I never keep in full time as I only need it when docking to trailer.
