Installing a new Black water tank on my 2004 Jayco 29 BHS

My black water tank split while flushing it at home and I have some questions. Being pretty handy I'm wondering how hard it is to replace it? How would I determine the right one to buy for my paticular TT and is there a better brand to buy vs others or are they all basically the same. Where's a good place to order one? How much do they usually cost ? How much would I expect to pay to have someone replace it for me? Is there someplace I can go that would step me through replacing mine? Sorry for so many questions and thanks for any help provided?

  • Black water tank on my previous rig developed a 4-5" long crack in the recess behind the drain connection. Was up in Indiana. Went to Home Depot and bought several large tubes of JB Weld. Sanded the crack, put on 3-4 layers of JB Weld. Used rubber gloves to smooth on areas that the putty knife could not reach. Drove that 5er for 5 more years and 40,000 miles without another leak. Tank was black which indicated it was ABS. JB Weld will not stick to the white colored tanks if they are Polypropylene although I have heard that there are now adhesives that will.
  • Call Jayco with your VIN# and they should be able to furnish the exact tank you need. All other questions fall into the "maybe, iffy, depends" sections of answers.

  • One year ago, because of a tire blowout, I replaced the BT in my Rexall MH.I tried to have it plastic welded,(very common as I understand) but the welder said it was fractured too badly for him to warranty it. The same dealer ordered me a new one.($400 w/ ship) It came from the very same place and mold that the original tank was made in in 2001.
It came w/ the sensors, and the 3" drain molded onto the tank, but I had to cut the other 2 holes for the turlet and the vent pipe.
At 70 yrs old, it was a real challenge at best, but I had to replace all the drain plumbing for both tanks, plus the large fiberglas box ($300) that contained it all, plus other structural steel bracing, etc etc, total estimate was $6800.
W/o any other damage, how hard can it be. Each installation is different I'm sure. If you ordered a tank, chances are it would come from where the original place like mine did. But if it is just a straight rectangle tank. maybe order it custom made to save some money. Or just get an estimate to have it replaced at any reputable RV dealer if you don't have a lot of the needed tools and equipment that mite be needed. If there is even a doubt in your mind if you can do the job, then you probably shouldn't ??
