Installing a new porch light

I am replacing a porch light above the entry door on my motor home. The replacement product bought at Camping World is exactly like the original installed on my Southwind. The old unit came off easily after removing 4 screws and using a razor knife to cut through the caulking. The caulking around the outside perimeter of the fixture was, of course, hardened after 11 years.
My question is a basic caulking question. What type of caulking should be used. There are so many options to choose from in a Lowes or Home Depot. What was interesting about the one I removed is that the bead of caulking inside was still soft and somewhat pliable. So I will scrape it clean and put new stuff on before screwing it in. Are there any special considerations I should know of given that the light is exposed to weather quite a lot?

  • Thanks for the advice. Just bought the butyl and the caulking at CMping World.
  • I used butyl tape from my rv store under the light, then I trimmed it flush and finished with a nice bead of Dicor rv caulk for a nice finished look and a double seal against leaks.
