I'm using a CCTV DVR intended for residential installation. Fact is, it was used in my home for a few years, before I upgraded to a better setup. It's now several revisions old.
My DVR actually has a computer type of power supply, converting the 120VAC to 19VDC. So rather than install an inverter to take the existing 12VDC, to convert to 120VAC, then the power supply back down to 19VDC, I bought a 12VDC to 19VDC DC-DC converter.
There's a video of it being tested here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0hqnXgl6cw
Along with this addition, I was able to tie into the 3 existing cameras on our RV (left turn signal, right turn signal, backup). I've added a 4th camera for a forward view.
We leave our rig plugged in since it lives next to our house. Could just as easily run it from batteries, but as you've noted, the system does use a fair amount of power.
With our setup, nothing needs to be done when we disconnect from shore power, drive, or park for extended periods. The CCTV system never sleeps!

Don't know if your DVR is like mine, but the few I own, all use a power supply.
