Intermitent wipers problem

My wipers seem possessed. They work fine then all of a sudden the will only work on high and stop in any other setting or they just can not be turned off any other way than pulling the fuse. After a day or so when I turn them on they work just fine. I have a workhorse chassis with a chev 8.1 engine. I would think this is a switch issue but before I spend the $200 parts plus installation to replace the whole steering column switch mechanism that controls cruise control, hazards, and turn signal I would like others input. Thanks in advance.

  • Not likely the switch or steering column stuff. Usually involves the park switch contacts that are part of the motor assy.

My '94 S10 Blazer had the wiper problem that was fixed under warranty. In my case I'd get phantom sweeps of the wiper blades at random times. The dealer told me at the time it was the control board, the switch or the motor.
  • The wiper motor on my 2000 went out and come to find out the wiper motor was not supplied by GM. Being 13 years old at the time, getting a replacement was problematic. Had to send it off for a rebuild. When it came back it would run, but not turn off. Instead of sending it back through multiple channels again, I simply put in a kill switch. A small pain when it rains, but I don't often drive in the rain.

    Good Luck

  • The switch selects motor windings to determine speed
Assuming that the switch is dry and this only happens in the rain when you need the wipers
It's the wiper motor or the wiring harness getting wet
  • Typical GM wiper motor issue it sounds like tome. Google search for the issue should point you to the problem.
