- MrWizardModeratorbuy the black n decker 40 amp charger
it will take Six hrs for your 6 amp charger to put out what the b n d will do in one hr
battery charge rate aka amps into the battery change with time
2 hrs of generator 'gas' with the b n d , will be more charge than 6 hrs of 'gas' and time with your 6amp charger
any 2000w inverter generator should do the job
IMO 1000w is cutting it too close with no 'expansion room'
you did not mention the 'Altitude' the cabin is at
power output capability is derated every 1000 ft
3000 fft means a loss of 10% or more
5000ft 20% power loss - GulfcoastExplorerThat's the problem.... maybe 4 hrs a day with morning sun, trees blocking the sun all afternoon.
- Even more reason to go solar. If the roof has sun.
- GulfcoastExplorerSorry, I forgot to post but this is a remote cabin, not an rv. Just need a couple of lights most of the time.
- Bill___KateExplorerIf you are mostly concerned with charging the battery in your RV, it is pretty hard to beat the charging circuits built into the modern RV converters in today's rigs. They offer programmed charging to minimize charging time and maximize battery life. Our unit charges at a maximum of 45 amps, but modulates and tapers off the charge as time goes on. At maximum, it draws about 6.5 amps of 120 volts AC (about 780 watts). We have one of the cheapy 1000 watt 2 cycle generators that cost $90. It does a pretty good job charging the battery, and while not anywhere near as quiet as the Yamaha or Honda, it has given us decent service for several years; of occasional use.
That being said, if we were going to be using it on a regular basis, I would definitely go for a higher quality unit, and if I wanted to run more than just the convertor (like computers or TV's) I would go for an inverter unit. I would love to have a pair of Honda 2000's, but that isn't in the budget .... - Tom_M1ExplorerBlack & Decker and Stanley both have a 40 amp charger for around $100.
- GulfcoastExplorerThe largest portable charger I have seen is a 10-amp, can you recommend a larger one? Thanks for your help.

I sure like the Champion 2000 (reconditioned) prices...
I thought it was better to charge a deep-cycle battery slow, not fast?
No, deep cycle should optimally be recharged as fast as possible. That said, I have a 15amp smart charger on two 125ah batteries at our camp and they will charge from 70% - 100% in an evening of running the gen to watch tv. - MEXICOWANDERERExplorerA six amp charger is gonna cause your battery to laugh itself to death.
