INVERTER ISSUE??

I have a 13 year old Pro Watt 1000 Xantrex inverter.
Recently, it is setting off alarm and yellow light indicating low available voltage. Checked out one year old house batteries and all four are good.
Could it simply be an "old" inverter needing replacement?
Thanks!

Well I found the problem - in double checking all the connections even though all the battery post nuts were tight, the positive cable to/from the inverter had a very badly corroded terminal end and was barely hanging on. I keep a few of those copper terminal ends so we were back in business in about 25 minutes.
Thanks for all the input - as always, I appreciate it.

Thanks for posting back about how you solved it. Not everybody does that. Helps with the knowledge base.

  • I don't know if this is electrically possible, but if the same appliance that the inverter ran ok now triggers the alarm, then maybe the appliance's wattage has increased due to some wear and tear in it over the years.

As others have said check the connections. Every time my alarm went off it was corroded connections. The last time this happened and I clean all connections I was ready to replace the inverter when I noticed the internal connection was corroded inside the end terminal. I removed the cable cleaned the terminal and cable end and soldered the terminal on instead clamping. Check to see if any green stuff is growing inside your terminal.
  • Yes check it with a load on the inverter, the one that gives the alarm
  • With the inverter doing that, compare the input voltage at the inverter's terminals with your own voltmeter to see if it is really as low as the inverter says it is.

If it is that low, then look for loose or corroded wire connections between there and the battery bank.
  • I would start by checking voltage with a good meter. Then check all connections.
Check inverter owner's manual to see if it can be reset. Some accomplished by removing DC input for a minute or so, then restarting.
