Inverter question

Is it possible to connect an existing AC outlets in the RV to both line power and an inverter?

Inverters I have looked at seem to have integral AC receptacles but no "hard wire" AC connections...

  • If your knowledgable of electrical wiring sure you can use something like this. I have 2 installed with an inverter. AC outlets in entertainment centers and kitchen automatically run of inverter if shore power not available (assuming I turned on the inverter)

    In Line Transfer Switch
  • You need an inverter with a transfer switch built into it to do it safely. Not likely in a cheap inverter but you will find it in the Magnum and Xantrex inverter lines and others. Be careful doing what others have suggested as sooner or later you will forget to turn breakers off and will have major issues to say the least.
  • Sure, you can just plug the shore-power line into your inverter and power all your existing outlets. BUT make sure you turn off the breakers for everything but your outlet circuits...
    - converter breaker off
    - fridge AC power breaker off
    - air conditioning breaker off
    - microwave breaker off
  • yes, but requires complex and fail-safe switches, because if it is possible to ever connect both shore power and the inverter at the same time, some dummy will do it and MAJOR damage WILL happen. We are talking here about the possibility of your inverter exploding in flames with a shower of sparks and vast clouds of smoke.

You will need at the very least a double-pole, double throw switch with the outlet(s) on the center pole that gets switched to either the inverter or the shore power, but cannot be set to connect inverter and shore power at the same time.
