The best I can tell, "pass through" is a feature/capability provided by a device called a "transfer switch" or "transfer relay".
Looking at one document per manufacturer, I found the following:
Outback: "AC transfer switch"
Magnum: "Expanded transfer relay"
Xantrex: "Built in transfer switch"
Aims: "AC auto transfer switch"
Tripp-Lite: "Automatic line-to-battery transfer switch"
Aims in one case further says: "built in 10A transfer switch for pass through capabilities".
The Xantrax Pro Series inverters are labeled "Pro Series Inverter with AC Pass Thru". On the Xantrex web page for this product it says "UL 458 approved MSW Inverters with Transfer Switch and Hardwire Input.", and "A built-in transfer switch automatically detects when generator or shore power status changes to ensure power is always available".
http://www.xantrex.com/power-products/power-inverters/pro-series-inverters.aspxI can't see that it's wrong to say the Freedom 10/20 has a built in transfer switch.
