I had a very similar issue with the 4K microlite in my C.
It turned out to be ‘safety’ built into the genny where if there isn’t (IIRC) 11+ volts to the genny (on these older units voltage in X 10 is voltage out) it shuts the unit down to prevent low voltage output which could damage stuff plugged in. That safety is bypassed when you hold the start button down.
I cleaned all the connections and repaired a few sketchy terminals and the problem went away.
