is there a 14" square vent there now, the one being removed ?
does it leak ?, is there any wood between that one and the roof ?
just how much curve is there ? that you think the vent with sealant under it, won't conform and needs this wood ?
if your really worried it will leak
just buy an RV A/C gasket
vents and A/C all use the same 14" sq hole in the roof
buy the A/C gasket approx $15
and put it between the vent and roof (yes your screws will go thru the gasket, it will be less likely to leak than wood with sealant)
you will never get wood to conform and fill any gape like a gasket or sealant
