you and i are on different wave lengths, you have lots of room for the 1x support frame
first you need a 14" sq hole for your new MAXair vent
center that over the existing hole, expand all four sides the exact same amount to make your new hole
the 1x trim goes around the hole 1" wide 1/2" thick a picture frame with a 14" hole in the middle
glue it to the inside
then mount the new vent flange on the outside the new screws come through the fiberglass and anchor into the 1x frame
existing holes will either be removed when you enlarge the opening or covered by sealant and flange when you mount the new vent
the frame also supplies a place to anchor the inside section/trim/screen
