Is our Atwood 10G water heater supposed to do this?

Hi all!

Out water heater, an Atwood GC10A-4E seems to be doing some strange behavior, at least compared to my previous experience with the Suburban heaters. The water is hot and plentiful so no worries there. What does trouble me a little is on the gas side. What happens is that we can hear the gas unit fire up and run for just two or three seconds and then quit. It will do this constantly every five or ten minutes. Sometimes it will fire the gas burner for maybe as long as 30 seconds and then shut off. When we have a heavy draw of hot water, such as showering or doing dishes, it seems to run normally burns for a couple of minutes and then shuts off. We run both gas and power simultaneously in order to speed up water recovery to normal hot temps. Is it normal for the gas burner to fire up every five or ten minutes and run for a very short period of seconds, less than thirty seconds, and then shut off?

Thanks All and Cheers!

Mike

  • I suspect the problem is caused by running both the gas and electric.

I use both for the original start up but after it has reached the proper temp I cut off the gas and the electric handles the recovery just fine.

Cut off your electric and see if the gas doesn't work more like you are expecting it to then.

  • Possible that the thermostat is not tight to the tank or insulated cover allows cool air to get to thermostat.
