Most auto-start systems use the inverter to trigger the auto start, not the generator. The inverter is on, delivering the power to the loads, it uses the battery power down to a preset level, it triggers auto-start, the generator starts running and supplies power to the loads via an auto-transfer switch (usually built into the inverter) and the inverter starts charging the batteries back up. All the generator has to do is have electric start (and automatic choke if it's gas powered).
