Bear in mind, on the extend side of a hydraulic cylinder there is just an empty tube with the fluid bearing on the entire face of the piston which creates more power, on the retract side the rod occupies part of the tube so the hyd. pressure can only bear on the reduced surface area of the piston which reduces the potential power it can generate, but given equal volume of fluid, means the cylinder will move faster.
