John Deere chassis rear disc brakes

1988 RV on John Deere chassis. Rear brakes are dragging. Cooked the fluid after 21 miles trip to the lake. Got it home by stopping every few miles to let them cool off. Checked temps with infrared temperature gauge when I got home, discs were at 440 and caliper body was at 250.

Figure I need to pull the brakes and do a rebuild, which doesn't look complicated, just time consuming and tedious. Parts manual says rear wheel brake is a Dana 080 AF 101.

Anyone have any suggestions on the best source for a rebuild kit (the seal and dust boot)?

Update: Called the local Freightliner place and nice guy said the Dana 080 AF 101 was the rear axle (which I knew) but was hoping the rear disc brakes were somehow standard to the Dana 080. No luck with the parts catalog I got with the motor home. The Page for the rear brakes says "Service part numbers were not available at this printing". Looks like I've got a lot of research to do. Maybe I'll get lucky and will find a part number stamped on the caliper.

  • We had an 89 GBM on J D chassis & I got the brake pads from NAPA, same pads front & rear & you'll find they are a normally stocked part because those same pads fit a bunch of school buses.
It could be as well, they would have the caliper parts & brake hoses you need. Would be a good idea, to go ahead & replace all those brake caliper hoses because of their age.
One thing you dont want, is a M/H with no brakes, how do I know, because we dropped off the Allegainey Mt on route 30 in PA & was only God that stopped that M/H at the bottom cause those brakes sure didnt.
Temp at the master cylinder was over 280* & lord knows what the calipers were.

  • My JD parts book, printed in 88, for my 89 34' Georgie Boy gives the rebuild kit (includes the pistons) as RW24160. JD number, Freightliner can interchange it.
