As for carrying cylinders, so far, next to having a good welder fab something that the canisters fit into and remain in place securely, a Manchester 20-30 pound rack that holds two which is securely bolted down (and when I mean securely, I mean some protection against vibration, be it Loctite or another means.

A tank rack securely bolted in place with appropriate sized bolts, lock washers, and nuts, or just locking nuts, should be well within the regulations. Most RV's of course, do have proper tank or cylinder mounting arrangements in place when they're sold.

Sorry I did not made it clear, but I was talking about tanks used in cargo space.
Than I never really check DOT requirements for big tanks on big vehicles, but what strike me that even semi-tractors with 220 gallons capacity, have 2 separate tanks at 110 gallons.
Sure at some point you will qualify as tanker with special requirements.

I think you will find that a vehicles tank are not considered 'carrying' fuel. They are talking about portable containers.

I think I would put stronger strap on loose propane tank than bungee cord, but nothing wrong with carrying extra propane tank in place with good ventilation.

Always wondered what the rules might be for this... It sits upright in the corner of my front deck and has a bungee cord around it... My regular propane tanks on the OFF-ROAD popup is two each 30lb tanks...

I'm pretty certain almost all do not have a secured location for when they go to fill loose cylinders via a car/truck. I wouldn't worry too much about your third cylinder. :)

I sometimes carry an extra 20# propane tank from my second RV when I am going to be out over a couple weekends somewhere camping off the grid...

Always wondered what the rules might be for this... It sits upright in the corner of my front deck and has a bungee cord around it... My regular propane tanks on the OFF-ROAD popup is two each 30lb tanks...

Always like to have a good PLAN B...
