Just bought my first Motorhome HELP!!!

I am a new Motorhome owner. I have it plugged in to my garage now . Went into it today noticed the switch that turns lights in bathroom on was hot to touch, has any one had this problem or know why this has happened. I unplugged home immediately until I can have it checked out.I am still learning what all the buttons on it are for.Any help would be appreciated .
  • Hope you didn't have it plugged into a 220 volt plug. Test the circuit to see what it is.

Is it a 50 amp plug? as in has four prongs or is it a 50 amp breaker line with a typical 3 prong plug? Most garages don't come with a 50 amp for an RV. Did you have it wired by an electrician?

What? Mine is plugged in to a household outlet all summer when we're not traveling. Charges batteries, runs the fridge and one air conditioner.

I'm pretty sure 20 amp electricity looks the same as 30 amp electricity.

So why shouldn't you plug into a 20 amp plug?
  • You just joined. You need to understand that ALL Motorhomes and RV;s are different. You need to state Year/Brand/Model of RV when you post for help. Usually when you have a 12 volt switch that is HOT to the touch, 2 things can cause that.
    1. IF the switch has a light in it, it is normal for those to get hot to the touch
    2. IF no light, then the connections on the back side are loose/corroded/burnt and this causes heat build up on a 12 volt switch. Your switch is 12 volts, not 120 volts. Take the switch loose and look at the back and if loose/corroded/burnt, it will be noticeable. The defective circuit will not cause any problems other than if it continues, will blow the 12 volt fuse for that light. Doug

  • I hope you unplugged it immediately. It would probably help people to know what unit you have and how old it is.
