The converter in our trailer has blue positive and white negative. No idea with blue and black. I would use the black for neg and the blue for pos and ALSO add a bit of red sticky tape to the blue by the terminal, so it is red and black like a lot of charging stuff is.
Yes trim the bare wire so it all fits in snug. Less chance of touching it with the other when you put the next wire in or remove it.
