You do not need to see the controller while you are on solar as it tells you nothing. Some have amps and volts read-outs but you can't see them either when you locate it properly near the batteries.
You can make all four wires on the controller with alligator clamps on the ends so they just clamp onto the battery and the wires from the array. In some location possibilities, the battery-controller can stay in place and you just attach the array to the controller each set-up (alligator clamps is one way)
My portable on the roof method is to use wire nuts to joint the array wires to the wires going down the fridge vent to the controller. You could do that on the tongue instead. When not hooked up for solar, the wire nut covers the end of the single wire left in place so it doesn't short against something or get wet.
