K-Z 16BH Brake Question

Problem description. I was working on getting my trailer ready for summer and when doing some test driving, I noticed that my brakes stick after braking. They don't lock, but are definitely sticking. It's worse when I use manual override to apply trailer brakes only. The brakes come un-stuck after rolling back on reverse even for few inches.

Question. So what do you guys think, is this simple "disassemble-clean/lube-reassemble" type gig or does it sound like needing new brakes? The controller (Tekonsha Prodigy RF) appears to be working well and changing the boost makes a noticeable difference, but if I want to adjust the boost high enough to grab trailer brakes, the sticking will occur. The problem may not be that bad on the road as after a brief test drive around couple of blocks getting up to 40 mph and stopping for stop-signs, the brake drums were warm to touch but not hot as I anticipated.

Also, I was pleasantly surprised by my Kia Sorento. On my slow test drive, the car towed the trailer beautifully. I wasn't loaded to the hilt, so a "full load test" is still in my plan before heading out for a real trip.

Also, I was thinking about buying new brakes just in case as driving to any trailer shop from where the trailer is stored is a bit of a trip, so do you have any recommendations on the brake assemblies?
  • First adjust the brakes. If that doesn't work, start pulling drums to see what is going on.
