Thanks Pianotuna for the information. I located the Smartguage article you referenced and it does seem to pretty much demolish the initial rush argument people have made against using a solenoid based separator system. Here is a link to the article:

I think I'm going to go with a solenoid activated by a manual switch rather than by the vehicle ignition system. Sure there is the risk of forgetting to turn it off when camped, but I'm going to wire in a light that shows when the batteries are connected which should provide enough of a reminder to disconnect it when appropriate. Now I just have to find a suitable continuous duty solenoid of sufficient capacity.
