I think I'm going to go with a solenoid activated by a manual switch rather than by the vehicle ignition system. Sure there is the risk of forgetting to turn it off when camped,
My continuous duty solenoid is powered through the ignition switch via a manually operated "dual" switch. If the ignition is off, the dual switch and solenoid are off, so there's no chance of running down the engine battery. If I need to charge the engine battery, then I can turn the ignition switch to the battery position and turn on the dual switch. I very seldom need to do that. My normal usage is merely to charge the RV batteries from the engine alternator, or get starting assist voltage from the RV batteries, not charge the engine battery from my converter.
