Killer Amps

I want to pull ten amps out of a little 35 ah battery for one hour and then fully recharge. Will this heavy draw destroy the battery? I know it is a small battery.
  • t105 20hr rate 225AH, 5hr rate 185AH, so my guess on a 35AH, drawing 10A, would get it down to 50% or less. so.... depending on construction, could either end up with a pretty short cycle life, dead battery, or nothing to worry about. but a 35AH 12V battery is likely pretty small, lots of very thin plates, not something that likes much discharge current. my guess based on my experience with motorcycle batteries, it ain't gonna work. But all you can do is try.

I do have a 30ish AH AGM battery for my motorcycle. If I was to try to draw 10A out of it for anywhere near 1 hour or even 1/2 hour it would be dead, dead, dead.

Those with this same battery who have left headlights on (5-8A draw) find the battery is to dead to start the bike after about 30 minutes.

CCA is 75A, and it won't do that for more than 10 seconds at a time with a rest and after 20 seconds or so it is pretty weak.
  • Not sure this applies, but my AGM (6GFM-250) has a graph (scroll down to the right for the "discharging curve" which in proportion to 10 amps on 35 would be 71 amps on the 250. On that graph, it would last about two hours to flat dead. (then can you recover it? and if so how many times?)

Another table from Barre's book for a 100AH battery has its capacity
    5 amps, 20 hrs, 100AH
    14 amps, 5 hrs, 70AH, and
    65 amps, 1 hr, 65AH

Where the 10 on 35 would be 28.6 amps, so somewhere under 5 and more than 1, so the 2 hrs with the other graph seems in the ballpark

  • you can try it
like Mexi , i doubt it will work
you want to pull 1/3 of its total capacity and do it in (1) Hour

that would be like pulling 70amps from a pair of CG for one Hr solid for 70amphrs

i have NO idea what the (3) hour rating of a 35Ahr battery (or any battery) would be
but i doubt that it reaches even 50% of normal 20 hr rating

meaning if it doesn't shut you down, its probably down to approx 5amphrs left and probably damaged
  • My guessing tells me it is likely to fall flat on it's face a bit more than 35 minutes. Wouldn't hurt to try it...
  • Hard to say.. but my guess it I wouldn't make it the whole hour. Peukert, you know.

Sorry, but if I knew the 10 amp rate then I would not be asking the question. It is a AGM battery. It works great with a 20 watt 12 volt fan, but I thinking of a 100 watt load for one hour at a time. From what I read, most batteries would be good using one third of their ah rating, but my question is if doing that in one hour will kill the battery?
