reading your post and thinking back in technology, it sounds like you got one of the old tech faucets that seal at the point of rotation of the faucet on top of the sink?
If so the only (it is over) way I did that was replace the faucet with one that has the hose that runs up thru the fixture to a pull out faucet head. Then it is over.
And yes it was s nut roll for a crinkled up ole bod of 70+ years.
