Yeah, water-pump pliers have their place, but it's in addition to a crescent wrench rather than a replacement.
A well built crescent wrench will have parallel jaws at any position, with little, to no, extra movement of the jaws.
Of course a good mechanic will tell you that there's no place for a crescent wrench in a well equipped toolbox. :)
