You really can't see down the cylinders with plugs out, Bud suggested putting a plastic straw in the cylinders and see if it goes up and down when the engine is cranked. I will try that tomorrow and also will also try squirting some oil in a cylinder to see if the pressure goes up.
Can't find manual on that model but some had a automatic compression release that were made to work with a spring and/or exhaust gear. Have you tried calling Kohler?
