A sword is as "contact toxic" as you can possibly get!

I don't know of any real use for WD-40:

If I need a solvent, I use Simple Green.
If I need a lubricant for parts, I use various densities of oil, be it PTFE or Hoppes 9 for locks. Engines get synthetic.
If I need a penetrating oil, I use Liquid Wrench.

If I need to oil bolts to keep them from seizing, I'll use PTFE, LocTite, or anti-seize goop.

The only thing I can think of that I'd use WD-40 for is its original use... a water dispersant, blowing it into something where water shouldn't be.

WD is like gas oil pre mix you run in a 2 stroke. Whole bunch of solvent reducing some oil, making it very, very thin and penetrating, solvent evaporates off leaving a thin film of oil. Good if with every piston stroke or cycle you are getting a fresh dose of solvent and oil, like in an engine.

Not good if you aren't lubricating frequently or every operating cycle. Lubrication then is not sustaining.

Not if you re-read the original post of this thread. At least until he finally learned better.

A LOT of folks confuse "I sprayed WD40 on it and it moved" with "WD40 is a wonderful lubricant." Those are not the same.

WD works great for its intended purpose, like freeing up seized components such as a long lost needle nose pliers left out in the rain for a year or 2. It does such a good job of it that I most times forget to actually "lube it" afterwards.

WD40 = coconut oil and solvent. It is good for wet spark plugs, cutting lubricant, and making the Mfg. rich. It dissolves certain rubbers and plastics and is a lousy lubricant or penetrating oil.

WD40 evaporates off over time leaving a sticky residue. It is a LOUSY lubricant.

I have used KwikLube for a number jobs other than my steps - my overhead garage door for one. It penetrates and then dries to a waxy lubricant.

A number of people have posted that motorcycle chain lube is similar and works well on steps but I haven't tried it.

If you go to the wd40 web site and read the 2000 uses it has polish, clean and remove stains and on and on but it doesn't say anything about penetrating oil.
