Kwikee electric step linkage

I have a 1995 Fleetwood Storm. It has 2 step Kwikee unit. The linkage broke.

No problem, the old linkage has a product #51364. I purchased a new linkage product #15364. It doesn't fit. The old linkage has a 1/4 in shaft. The new linkage has a 1/2 in. shaft. I need a new gear box. That's ok, it looks worn. I can't buy a gear box.

Plan "B" contact Power gear (Kwikee). They said no problem, just buy an update kit. The update kit is $337.00. It includes everything except the steps.

My electric harness is perfect. My motor is perfect. All I need is a gear box that will accomidate a 1/2 in. sq. shaft.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for any replies.
  • Lets think outside the box. I see 3 options.

1: Drill out the rivets holding the shaft end to the ball socket on the new and old parts. Rivet old and new pieces back together. Or bolt pieces back together. If you use a bolt, the bolt head will need to be thinned. There is very little clearance for the arm to swing by the gear box.

2: Drill out the gear in the housing. Purchase a square file and make the hole ½" square.

3: Grind the new shaft down ¼"

  • This is some info I have collected over the years from various threads for Kwikee steps. Maybe something will be of help.

On disasembly of the motor I found the plastic plugs severly lopsided due to all the years of strain, new plugs cost $8.00 at Autozone or Amazon, other than that the Autozone Ford Mark VI would have worked $ $44, but I saved myself $38

Just rplaced my 25 series Kwikee step motor with a Dorman 742-277 window lift motor for a 1986 Ford Taurus driver side window lift motor. They said the Taurus had a high torqe motor which is why the number ends with 277 meaning high torqe. My steps zip in and out with this motor application. It was a special order item but only took one day for them to get it to my local AutoZone store. I also noticed AutoZone had rebuild kits for Dorman window lift gear boxes (plastic gears) in the Help section of the store.
