KWIKEE electric steps to manual?

Recently the KWIKEE steps on my 2000 Winnebago Minnie Winnie did not retract and they caught a concrete guard around a gas pump. A mechanic with the circus (I traveled as the teacher) I was travelling with straightened the steps and could make them work with an external battery but they would not work when hooked up normally.

Here's my question: Is it a wise idea to get them open, remove the gears and turn them into manual steps? I know AAI can buy a manual set, but I already have these installed, and the steps, when straightened, were rebuilt with better bolt connections.

All input appreciated.

  • When the linkage is disconected the steps will move when you step on them. Also how will you open the man. steps when you are inside unless you go out the drives door to pull them out? I replaced mine buying them on the internet at half the price the dealer wanted. Mine are 3 step. I only saved the motor.
  • I found a very helpful website called Bob's Guides

Contains a lot of how to instructions and trouble shooting steps along with links to Kwikee manuals. All free information.

Mike, Traveling Circus, Traveling Teacher...gotta be a joke there someplace.
Before you try what I'm going to say, you must disconnect power from the step mechanism. Then...
Can you disconnect the motor arm from the steps and see how tight they are to operate? The motor will not move the steps if it senses what I'll call Opposition. When fully Open or fully Closed, that's Opposition, and the control unit stops the motor. Probably based on current draw. It doesn't use limit switches, just Opposition.
If the steps are tight to move, that's Opposition and the motor won't run. Easiest case would be to continue to work on the steps and get them to fold and unfold freely. Then you'd have electric operation again.
Manual Steps fold in a way that they cannot open without a lifting/pulling motion. If you want to disconnect the motor and make yours manual, your issue will be to make up a way to be sure they cannot fall open on the road.
