Large Helium balloon for locating RV when riding

At the dunes in Glamis, I have seen RV's with large helium balloons flying a couple hundred feet above them on a string or rope so riders can find their RV from a long distance. Does anyone know the best setup for doing that with a re-usable balloon and helium tank? Thanks!

  • Actually I can tell you from personal experience that light weight trash bags work just fine. On those midnight shifts bored workers discovered that you can fly trashbags and even add strips of aluminum foil and lights to look like a UFO....

I'd get the cheap non-reinforced bags as they are lighter. Hydrogen works too for that matter.
  • when i was flying i carried an EFB...electronic flight bag (ipad mini) with software that would show my position, airports, etc. a digitized version of the FAA sectional charts. but i ALWAYS carried and had within reach a current FAA paper sectional map to use WHEN not IF the EFB device failed. old school works. the OP will need a large enough balloon that can be seen for at least a couple of miles.

I gave a friend coordinates to my location. When he called me a mile away and asked where I was, I said "did you use those coordinates?". His reply: " I don't know how."

Back in the late 90’s out there I was using an old Garmin emap strapped to the gas tank on my KTM 380sx. Never got lost.
  • Where do you get a 3 or 4 foot reusable balloon and refillable helium tank?
