For me, the higher voltage panels with an mppt controller meant I could use thinner 10ga cables, and the panels were cheaper and readily available (I could pick them up locally - no shipping charges) as they were primarily sold for house/cottage solar systems in Ontario.
I was lucky and found a pair of smaller 72 cell high voltage panels (195W) that were only 32" wide that would just fit. Later I added a wider 72 cell panel (300W) with matching (Vmp).
At the time, available mppt controllers seemed to be more sophisticated battery chargers, with available temperature compensation, and adjustable voltage set points and timers, in addition to the mppt function, so the extra cost was worth it to me.
