Learning about RV electricity

Hello everyone,

I am new to RVing and will be picking up my new to me motorhome in two weeks. I am also new to undertanding RV electrical systems. Are there any books or resources to help a newbie learn about amps, volts, inverters, converters, electricity requirements and demands for the RV and appliances. something that goes beyond the owners manual.

Something like an rv electrical for dummies books would be great.

Thanks,

Stuart

This is a typical electrical configuration layout for a 30AMP Trailer.

  • Even just a Google Search for RV electrical systems will give you lots of information.
The above mentioned references are great for the 12VDC side of things, but you also want to know about the 110VAC:) This is one of the reasons that an RV can become confusing, as they have multiple systems, and really need to understand them all...at least enough to use them:)

Another great help, if you can get it, is to spend some time with one of the Techs where you get the RV (assuming you are buying from a dealer, since you are waiting 2-weeks). They should give you a walk-around, and you can pick their brain too! Some Salesmen are knowledgeable, some aren't:(

And, there is always right here at RV.net:)
  • Look on Amazon for "Managing 12 Volts". I believe the author is Harold Barre. It is one of the best books I have found on the subject. There are also numerous online resources like "Battery University".
