Leveling Jack Fluid

Anyone know where to look for the hydraulic fluid that makes the leveling jacks go upon and down?

I have a 2002 Sahara Safari M-3996. Its so frustrating trying to find any information that's helpful. Seems like it forces you to a repair shop.

Thanks for any help.

  • It might be a good idea to wipe/spray the pistons down with a silicon spray. I think using an oil can collect dust and/or grit on them. A simple lubrication might correct your problem
  • Ayes, but the springs look like they keep the jacks up if theres a failure. They have the feel of hydraulic
jacks when operating the switch to raise and lower.

Both I guess. I have to help the jacks up when I put them down to level. I'd like to check the level of the fluid to see if its low and if it is, I'lll need to add some fluid.

Do your jacks have springs on them? If they do, the problem isn't the fluid level.
  • Its likely type 3 ATF. auto tranny fluid. If its red, it almost certainly is.
Amber hydraulic fluids are numbered by viscosity, such as 32, 46, or 64, each is suitable for use in different weather. 32, cold, 64 hot.

  • Are you talking about finding the fluid itself, or the fluid reservoir?
  • I appreciate the quick response. I'm a bit of a novice wrench monkey. Where do I find pictures or details of my RV with this stuff or am I stuck going to a repair shop?
    Thanks again,
  • Look on and around the motor and pump that sends pressure to the jacks. There should be a tag or sticker that specifies what type of fluid that should be used. Otherwise, call or e-mail the manufacturer of the jacking system to get recommendations. The fluid itself will be available at just about any auto or truck parts dealer, Walmart or Target store. Use caution, as the wrong type fluid cam permantly damage your system, and void any warranties. If you are unable to location this information, your best option is to seek a qualified repair person or shop.
