If you are talking about "garbage" in general, like plastic waste, the vast majority of it comes from a relatively small number of rivers in SE Asia and a few countries in the Caribbean and North and Eastern part of South America.

this might have been mentioned in the linked travelogue but I got bored quickly. I heard someplace that 7 major river systems contribute to the worst of the pollution. none of which are in N america.
