I would recommend the use of a product that is specifically designed to address such a scenario as this.

WD40. Blast the generator board then wipe with a clean cloth and Q-tips. Repeat until the cloth and Q-tips come out clean.
Water PLUS carbon make for a dastardly-duo when it comes to printed circuit board short-circuits. The very first Motorola 8AL model alternators were subject to this fault. Motorola then corrected the design error by applying a conformal coating to the voltage regulator board.
