If you are opting for the Lifeline Series, we'll use the GPL-4CT in a 6V size to compare with the 31XT. The GPL-4CT uses a different plate, but the recipe is roughly the same.
The 3-cell batteries cannot not be mixed directly with the 6-cell batteries in a battery bank. The internal resistance difference will result in the batteries becoming unbalanced and it will result in short life.
If you are planning on replacing the GPL-31XT battery bank with GPL-4CTs that would be fine. The GPL-4CTs have a slightly thicker positive plate than the GPL-31XT's, but both are designed for deep cycle applications. Either would work so it really depends on how system is setup and how much room there is for extra batteries and what type of wiring setup you have.
