Fire department, what a joke ! God, am I glad I was never a paid proffessional.
What the worst that could happen using a little undersized wire ? It would have some voltage loss, thats what, mite even warm up a little at the worst,.....a long ways from needing a fire department.
I remember too many years ago, I wired an analog ammeter into the 60 amp alternator on my old Taska w/ 10ga wire. The nator was my only charging system. When I fire the 454, the wires on the ammeter would get so hot I had to let go, and then let it back to an idle for a minute or so. Later I learned to start it and leave at idle (30 amps) for a few minutes, then put my speed control stick on the pedal. It never hurt nothin, but I was always going to fix it, but just never did. I told the buyer how to do it when I sold it :)))
