Losing air from primary tank to air dryer (long)

Hello,

I have a 2004 Freighliner with a Pure Air Plus dryer that has been purging air every 30 seconds or so.

I have installed upper and lower kits on the dryer, changed the governor, and installed an unloader kit at the compressor.

I put an air gauge on the primary tank on the automatic purge valve just under the primary air tank' s inlet hose from the dryer and observed the pressure build to 135 and then the dryer's purge valve dumps and the gauge drops to 120 on the gauge, holds there for about 5 to 10 seconds and then climbs to 135. The cycle continues after this. The pressure holds constant at 135 down stream of the inlet valve on the primary from the dryer.

Haldex says to check the check valve at the bottom of the dryer. I have put it back together three times. It is a very simple check valve, one disk, small spring and an O ring. They advised to add another one way valve that I haven't done yet.

Freightliner sent a diagram when I called them.

Anyone have ideas?

Thanks!

  • First off, verify there is no air leaks before primary tank and air drier.

Secondly, reset the governors unloader to 120-124 psi. No higher.

Pump brakes to get tank (primary and any others) down to below 90 psi.
Start engine and re check that governor unloads at 120-124 psi.
    (if not re set)

More than likely your issues will all disappear once governor is set properly.

Thirdly, when governor unloads at the proper psi, stop engine and observe gauges to check for any leaks. Any leak will cause low pressures and constant cycling of the compressor.

The driers valve is designed to 'unload' to expel moisture every time the governor cycles. It's doing it's job. It also can't be expected to hold up to the extreme pressures that it is 'seeing' now.

Post back so we know how you made out, or if more help is needed. Good luck and be safe!
  • Check the Governor ! Pressure seems high- Mine pops at 120 and maintains 100 down the road.
  • is your compressor cycling while this is happening?? a bad air leak can have your compressor cycling to often, and in turn the air drier.

most air dryers cycle from the governor on or near the compressor.
