LT Tire Life

I have always replaced our TT tires every 3 years based on blow outs I had with ST tires. Our current trailer is on it's second set of LT tires and they completed their third season last year. What has been your experience with how long LT tires last in a trailer application with long periods of not being used? The tires were treated with Sunblock for tires when new and are covered when the trailer is being stored outside. I am inclined to use them another year.

  • I'd go at least another year or two (and more) as long as tires are visually in good shape, no cracking or extreme wear.
  • I'd use them this 4th year and get them off after that. Dry rot is caused by tires sitting, and not being moved. When rolling the tire "oils / lubricates" it self. When sitting it does not, it dries out. Even inside a warehouse not mounted.
  • My LT BF Goodrich Commercial TA's turned 5 years old yesterday and have 5,000 miles on them and I intend to go another year or two watching for problems. My rig never sees the sun except when we are using it, it stays under a closed in garage at home and sees very little sunshine when camping as I like shady spots. :)
  • I am on my second set. I had Tacoma Lt tires {USA made} on mine and I just replaced them after 8 years when they just started to show a few cracks near the rim bead area. I watched them carefully and never had a single problem with them. I always kept them covered except for when we were camping. I had the stock white spoke rims on them and 2 of them would leak slowly so I had to keep a close eye on them. I always ran them at 80 P.S.I. I finally put aluminum rims on last year and my leaks went away.
  • I've let LT tires go beyond 5 years and didn't experience any tire problems until they began to show sidewall cracks....not the tiny spider webbing type cracks but 1/16 to 1/8 inch wide cracks. My biggest mistake was not covering the tires while in storage. Now I cover the tires.

Like others have said 5-6 years for replacement no matter how much tread is still left on the tires. Correct pressure at all times.

and I'd add, How Often do you Travel with the Trailer?

I firmly believe that a trip every month or two, even if short, say 50 miles, helps the tires by kneading the oils throughout the rubber.
