Lugs

I've been using solder lugs for my connections as opposed to crimp on, all the way up to 1/0. The ones where you put the lug in the vise, drop in the solder slug, hold the striped cable in place and hit the lug with a torch till the cable end slides down when the solder melts. Has anyone had any problems with these? I've not seen them mentioned here.

  • I made my lugs from 1/2" copper tubing. I cut off about 4" and flattened 2" in the vice. Fold back 1" to make it double thick. Drill a 3/8" hole in the flat part. Put in the 000 wire, clamp with the vice. No solder at all. That was back in 1997, and I installed a Trace M1512 inverter, rated at 1500 watts. I have run as much as 150 amps through those wires, and - well over 15 years and they held up well. No problems yet.

    Good luck on your project

    Fred.
