Magic Chef oven problem

Hello everyone, here is my first question on this forum..... Probably my first of many;)

I just bought a used travel trailer in really nice shape and everything seems to be in working order, except for the oven (Magic Chef). The stove top works brilliantly, but the oven seems to be having issues. The pilot lights and the flame grows as I increase the temperature, just like it should. The problem is that it is not igniting the main burner. I have researched and learnt that it may be a few different issues (probably the thermocouple), but I can't even start investigating because I have no idea how to get the tray off that sits over the pilot and burner.

Can anybody give me any tricks or easy ways to get this tray off, and then any other ideas of what might be stopping the main burner from turning on?

Thanks in advance:)
  • If it is older than ~2004, then odds are it is a mercury safety switch, not a thermocouple. Make sure the flame completely envelops the bulb, and wait for a bit- it often takes 30 seconds or more for the main burner to ignite.
If the flame does not completely envelope the bulb, the pilot assembly needs cleaning.
  • There are a couple of springs at the rear. Lift the front off the two tabs, push and lift at the same time it should slip off the two rear tabs. The rear slots are "L" shaped if that makes sense? BTW if the thermalcouple were bad the pilot would not stay lit. Light the pilot and after a minute turn the hurner up to maybe 350 the main burner should come on if not i would suspect the gas valve is bad.
