Magnetic Screen Door, Is it feasible?

I have been thinking about replacing my truck camper screen door with a magnetic screen door. The magnetic one would eliminate the hassle of sliding the panel to open or lock the outer door. The one that I have in mind is made by Vive Comb Corp and is shown here Magnetic Screen Door. The price is $13.65.

The screen door frame and door are both made from aluminum so the magnets won't stick to them. The door jamb frame is 26 X 70. This door is 39 X 82.
1) Can the screen be cut to the 70" length?
2) Can one side of the screen be cut narrower and the Velcro sewn back on?

Who has experience with this type of door? What are your thoughts, opinions, and comments? All discussion is very welcomed.

  • If the magnets are too weak, you may be able to beef them up. There are rare earth magnets online that have holes in them -- use a small screw to attach the magnet to the aluminum frame. Then mount a thin piece of steel (like plumber's pipe strap) to the place where the magnet will touch.

I have not done this with a screen door, but I have done it with other projects in my woodshop. The magnets are very powerful.
  • We had one in our S&B a few years ago and it lasted about 3 weeks and then the magnets wouldn't hold securely. It was a waste of $$. They may be better now.
